Alberta’s Arthritis

If you haven’t been paying attention to the Alberta government budget deficits you can think of it as a bad case of Arthritis.  Painful, chronic and hard to treat and more nagging and aggravating as the pain is more acute.

Alberta’s budgets today and going forward are laden with deficit spending. Year after year after year.   Here is how Alberta’s accumulated debt will grow over the next few years.

Fiscal Year Accumulated Debt in Billions
2014-15 $12.8
2015-16 $19.9
2016-17 $32.7
2017-18 $45.0
2018-19 $58.7
2019-20 $71.1

Overall growth in operating spending will be 2.2 per cent, compared to 3.9 per cent in the past 2016/17 fiscal year.  The current plan to get to balance such as it is is to hold the per cent cost at a rate below inflation with a hope that balance budget can be made in 2023-24
